GLITTERY CHRISTMAS STOCKING HOLDER DIY

November 19, 2015 & 4 Comments

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

I am in full on Christmas mode, and yes I will pause for Thankgiving next week, but I know that I need to get going on Christmas now because otherwise when we get back from Disney it will be 10 days of stress! And I absolutely love the holiday season, so I want to spread it out and savor it, and prepping ahead means I can do that and limit the stress. Last year I shared a DIY Holiday Wreath Tutorial and I was happy to get that out again this year.  We do not have a fireplace, so no mantel to hang the stockings, and every year Santa has just found them laying out on our loveseat, which is fine but not very special. I had seen some adorable stocking hangers on Etsy, but decided that I would make my own. I was able to do this DIY for only a few dollars, and it didn’t take too much time either. If you’d like to see part of the process you can on my Daily Vlogs day 107-110. What I love about this is you can completely make it your own depending on your personal style or home decor. I hope you enjoy it!

ChristmasStockingHangerDIY-LeahTackles.jpeg

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

christmasstockinghangerdiy-leahtackles.jpeg

-1 Piece of wood to be the back of your stocking hanger (*Tip: I bought all of my wood in small pieces at Lowe’s!)

– 1 piece of wood for each stocking you want to hang (I used 5 because our family has 5 people)

-Screws

-Heavy Duty D Rings

-Various Spray Paints or Acrylic Paints (I used white spray paint, silver spray paint, gold glitter spray paint)

-Decou-Page or Mod Podge

-Mod Podge Glossy Acrylic Spray Sealer

-Gold glitter

-Gold Hooks (I found mine at Lowe’s and bought one for each stocking)

STEP 1:

Using screws attach the pieces of wood to the piece of wood that will be your backing. I wanted mine at various heights, so mess around with it until you’re happy with the look.

STEP 2:

Attach your D hooks to the back of the stocking hanger

IMG_1648 diy-stocking-hanger-leahtackleschristmas-leahtackles.jpeg

STEP 3:

Spray paint the entire front and sides of your stocking hanger white and let dry.

christmasstockinghanger-nofireplace-leahtackles.jpeg

STEP 4:

Spray your silver paint focusing on the bottom of your stocking hanger and releasing as you go up to create a gradient or ombrélook. I promise this is much easier than it sounds! You can do a few practice strokes if you want, but it doesn’t need to look perfect.

diy-christmas-stocking-hanger-leahtackles.jpeg

STEP 5:

Spray the very bottom of your stocking hanger with gold glitter spray paint. I did several layers because I wanted it to be opaque. Once again let it dry.

silverandgold-christmasstockinghanger-leahtackles.jpeg

STEP 6:

Mix some Mod-Podge or Decou-Page with your gold glitter. I went heavy on the gold glitter, because I wanted it to be super sparkly, but be sure to add enough glue so that it spreads and sticks. I applied the glitter glue to only the very bottom of the stocking hanger.

sparkly-christmasstockinghanger-diy-leahtackles.jpeg

STEP 7:

Spray with a glossy spray to seal the glitter and paint. I used one from Mod-Podge.

STEP 8:

Attach the hooks to the bottom of your stocking hanger once it is COMPLETELY dry! My sweet hubster did this which was a nice surprise : ) Make sure that you put the hooks as far apart as possible intead of in the middle of each board, it may not look perfect because it won’t look perfectly even, but once the stockings are hanging it will look better because they won’t be quite so close together.

STEP 9:

Hang your stockings and wait for Santa : ) : )

I really hope that you enjoyed this DIY project! I think you could do something similar to hang your house keys and that would be adorable year-round! Please send me pictures or tag me on social media (all linked at the top of this website or at the bottom of every blog post!) because I would *LOVE* to see them! Don’t forget to subscribe! Thank you!! xo

OH CHRISTMAS TREE! | 2015 |

November 9, 2015 & 2 Comments

Hi there! Happy Monday!

I hope that you had a fantastic weekend! Our Christmas tree goes up November 1st every year, and this year was no different, but because I was sick that day we didn’t decorate the tree until this past weekend. I know it’s pretty early, but as a family we enjoy decorating so much, and savoring every bit of holiday magic. For the past 5 years our trees have been themed, and this year Hailey, our 4 year old, picked the theme: FROZEN! I can’t say I’m surprised ; ) When do you decorate? Do you have any special Christmas or holiday decorating traditons? And of course the big debate: is your tree real or fake? Our tree is fake, because we do decorate so early and travel so often, but I adore the smell of real trees! We buy scented things to tuck into the branches that really do smell like a real tree and I love them!

Homemade Glitter Playdough {No-Bake and 5 Ingredients!)

July 8, 2015 & Leave a Comment

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

Can you believe that it’s going to be the middle of July in a few days? We are finally getting some gorgeous weather here, but we have had some rainy days where we are stuck inside…blah! The kids get restless, FAST! Because I have 3 kids who are all so young going places isn’t a simple undertaking, and we usually are home on weekdays, so I LOVE this playdough recipe because it has all things that I have on hand. A lot of homemade playdough calls for heating the ingredients or ingredients that I don’t always have, so this one sticks out to me. The kids had a great time making this, and it works really well days later.

Homemade Glitter Playdough:

What You’ll Need:

1 Cup of Water

Food Coloring

4 Cups of Flour

1 1/2 Cups of Salt

3-4 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil

Glitter

Step 1:

Pour your water into a large bowl.

homemadeplaydough-leahtackles.jpeg

Step 2:

Add your food coloring and then stir! We made a purple-ish color.

homemadeglitterplaydough-leahtackles.jpeg

Step 3:

Add your dry ingredients and stir. Next add your oil so it isn’t so crumbly, but not too much to where it’s sticky.

homemadeplaydough-leahtackles.jpeg

IMG_8297

Step 4:

Add your GLITTER!!

IMG_8299 homemadeglitterplaydough-leahtackles.jepg

Step 5:

Mix it up! We formed ours into balls & stored in plastic containers but plastic baggies would work, too.

IMG_8301 leahtackles-homemadeplaydough.jpeg

Step 6:

Have fun!!

Kisses, Kisses, Up & Down by Baby Luvs Books Review AND Giveaway!!!

July 1, 2015 & 4 Comments

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

I hope that you’re having a GREAT week! I’ve been frazzled this week dealing with lots of scheduling issues and appointments! Because this week has been so hectic I decided it was the perfect time to share this special book with you, because it always reminds me to be in the moment with my kids, even when I am in “IHAVENOTIMETODAY” mode.

Baby Luvs Books reached out to me well over a month ago on my Twitter and asked if I would like to recieve a copy of their book for review purpose and I immediately said YES! My kids love books, and when I googled this book I thought it looked right up our alley. You can read my full disclosure here, but as always I give my honest opinion and NEVER accept money in exchange for a positive review. I was sent a copy of this book for consideration, but I was not paid to review this book! I only review things that I believe line up with LeahTackles.com : ) Baby Luvs Books is also giving away a book to one of you & it will ship directly from amazon.com!

Kisses, Kisses, Up & Down by Baby Luvs Books:

kisseskissesupanddownbabyluvsbooks-leahtackles.-review-giveaway.jpeg IMG_8056 IMG_8057 IMG_8058 IMG_8059

This beautifully illustrated book shows a mama giving her baby kisses through out the day while doing there normal routine. I love that this book appeals to each of my children! Logan, who is 5 months old, likes the bright colors and watching me make silly faces before giving him kisses for each page. Connor, who is 2, loves identifying the different body parts that the mama kisses like his hands and his feet! Hailey, who is 4, loves that the body part is in different color/ bold font, and she likes to sound out the words while I read. My favorite part of the book is that I never want to rush this book! Even when the nighttime routine is stressful and I’m just ready for some kid-free time, this book makes me want to take my time savoring the sweet kisses with my babies. Books are SO important and I don’t think a child can ever have too many books…okay maybe, but we rotate them ; )

Giveaway:

If you would like to win this book for your child or a special child in your life just follow these simple steps!

Let’s Talk About Breastmilk! Breast Pumping Blog Post

April 22, 2015 & 5 Comments

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

Last week I shared What I Eat In A Day and How I Increase My Milk Supply and I was thrilled once again that people were interested to hear more about my pumping schedule and tips. This post is mostly about pumping and not breastfeeding itself.  Once again, I am not a doctor or a lactation consultant, these are just my own opinions and what has worked for me.

*Note: I love breastfeeding but I absolutely understand that not everyone can or wants to breastfeed and I am totally okay with that!! My middle child, Connor, had some pumped breastmilk but was unable to breastfeed. : )

Logan Cuteness:

logan3months-leahtackles.jpeg

My Breast Pump:

I use a Medela Pump In Style Advance and love it! I bought it when my daughter was born in April 2011 and am once again using it. I also have a manual hand pump for car trips, or when I don’t want to lug out the big electric pump. I really liked having a manual pump when he would only eat on one side during a session instead of eating on both when he was a newborn but my other side needed some relief from engorgment.

Pump Maintenence:

Obviously you need to wash the bottles and pump flange/breast shield, but you also should replace the membranes of your pump! I have had issues not pumping as much and just replacing the membranes makes a huge difference! You can buy them online, at medical supply stores, or at Target for only a few dollars for several of them in one pack. Also, be sure to replace your pump tubing every once in awhile, I have also noticed a great difference with that! I also let my pump run for a minute or so after each pumping session so that the tubing stays clear. You *can* clean it yourself with rubbing alcohol, which I did once following an online tutorial, but it was a huge hassle and it’s much easier to let the pump run to keep them clear and then replace them every so often in my opinion.

Pumping Schedule:

Initally, if your baby has a hard time nursing at first, PUMP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! It is exhausting and a pain in the butt, but it will make a huge difference in the long run. I was very lucky with Logan because he latched on right away, and I think that is largely do to the fact that I knew what I was doing this time. So, with Logan, I have only pumped once a day from the beginning.  Hailey had a very hard time breastfeeding for the first several weeks, and I would say we didn’t have it down completely until 6-8 weeks. So, with Hailey I pumped several times a day those first few weeks to establish a supply.

Once you and your baby have established a routine decide when and how often you want to pump. With Hailey I pumped every single night after she had eaten and every single morning after her first feed. Now, because Logan is such a good eater and because with 3 kids under 4 is a lot busier than just 1 kiddo, I pump only in the mornings BUT I pump Every.Single.Morning. Ideally you should pump at a time when you want your body to produce more milk because your body will start to produce when your baby nurses or when you pump on a regular basis. Try to stick to a similar window of time that you pump each day if possible. I wake up every day at 5:30 to feed Logan and then I have coffee and get ready and by 6:30 or 7 I am pumping. I often pump while doing my makeup 🙂 See below for information on a hands-free-pumping-bra a.k.a a lifesaver!

Hands-Free-Pumping:

I don’t suggest using one of these right away, because at first you’re still getting used to pumping, and sometimes need to read, watch tv, or look at a picture of your baby so you are able to relax. I even downloaded some free relaxation apps to listen to although I typically just watched tv. Once you are comfortable pumping, I definitely suggest making or buying a hands-free-pumping-bra. I have this one and I love it! Even if I am just sitting watching tv when I pump, I can wear it and eat breakfast, drink my coffee, or even type a blog post ; ) I am not pumping right now, but I could be! haha : )

Power Pumping:

I had never “power pumped” until I switched up my diet with Logan too suddenly and my breastmilk supply plummeted. Power pumping is a technique that is used to trick the body into releasing more prolactin which is the same as when a baby goes through a growth spurt and wants to eat more often or cluster feed. Power pumping will tell your body that you need more milk! I used this website to help me power pump and it absolutely worked! I pumped from 6:30a.m to 7:30a.m for 5 days in a row and I saw results in 3 or 4 days.

To power pump, pick one hour each day or night and pump using this routine:

Pump for 20

Rest for 10

Pump for 10

Rest for 10

Pump for 10

This provides 40 minutes of pumping in an hour. It is not as awful as it sounds because during the “rest” periods I would go get breakfast for the kids, switch a load of laundry, etc so I wasn’t just sitting…I am not good at just sitting ; )

Breast Milk Storage:

This is definitely a matter of preference! I love my Lansinoh breastmilk storage bags, but I know other people love other brands. I have heard great things about the bags made by the Up and Up brand from Target as well. I store my milk in 4 oz bags with the occasional 2 oz bag for when baby is very young or for when the baby is older and may need 6 oz (this way you don’t throw away good milk by combining 4 oz bags and potentially having extra). I freeze my breastmilk flat and then use boxes to store by date starting with the oldest milk so that is what gets used first. We purchased a deep freezer chest when I was breastfeeding Hailey because I pumped SO much breast milk. Hailey was weaned by 13 or 14 months, but she had breastmilk daily (along with cows milk) until 18 months because I had pumped so much.

Breastfeeding Supplements and Diet:

If you have questions about any of the supplements I take please see this post where I explain what I use, and if you have further questions or want to know something specific please ask in the comments!! : )

Thank you as always for reading! Please consider subscribing if you haven’t already and sharing with your friends! You can use the share buttons at the bottom of this post!! : )

What I Eat In A Day! {WITH VIDEO} AND How I Increase My Milk Supply!

April 15, 2015 & 5 Comments

Hi there! Happy Wednesday!

As promised, today I am going to be sharing an exmaple of what I eat on an average day. On my post Logan Sullivan is 3 Months Old!! Baby and Body Update!  I was plesantly surprised by messages and comments asking me for more information on what I do to increase my milk supply so that I can pump and store lots of breastmilk. So, I have added down below what I take to increase and maintain a good milk supply. If you have any questions please *comment* and I will be more than happy to help in any way I can : ) Messages or asking on social media is totally fine, but commenting is preferred because it’s benefital when reaching out to companie for giveaways for things that interest you guys!! ; )

*Note: I in NO WAY eat perfectly and I definitely “cheat” except I don’t consider it cheating because I just try to eat well overall and eat lots of protein, but I don’t deprive myself : )

WHAT I EAT IN A DAY IN PICTURES/VIDEO:

Here is my YouTube video showing an example of what I eat in a day:

(If you like this please click that thumbs up button & the red subscribe button!)

Here are some pictures of other meals that I eat on a typical day:

whatieatinaday-leahtackles.jpeg

WHAT I EAT ON AN AVERAGE DAY EXPLAINED:

Coffee and Water:

I wake up at 5:30 every day (yep! Except Sunday’s when sometimes I go back to sleep) and ALWAYS drink some coffee after having a big glass of water. When I have a few extra minutes, sometimes I have lemon in my water, but quite honestly I haven’t done that in months.

Breakfast:

I usually have a protein shake every morning made by my awesome hubs, Steph. He has had them for years, but I only recently started drinking them and now I’m hooked. My shakes have: carton egg whites, protein powder, oatmeal packed (uncooked), flaxseed, brewers yeast, and water. It may sound gross, but protein power flavors can cover basically anything! The flaxseed and brewers yeast are to increase and sustain my breast milk supply.

Snack:

I usually have apples with peanut butter, almonds, trail mix, or sometimes if I need it a PB&J.

Lunch:

Chicken and rice with soy sauce. I like too much soy sauce. Because I am breastfeeding, I often eat this same meal in small portions twice/day so I have lunch and “second lunch”. I also have greens or a salad with lunch or some sort of veggie or fruit.

Snack:

I love Blue Diamond Oven Roasted Dark Chocolate Almonds and I buy the big bags. They are AMAZING! My friend gave me some in a care package more than 2 years ago, and it’s been one of my go-to snacks ever since.

Dinner:

This is where my meals vary the most, but I do have something that has some protein but also quite a lot of fat. When I cut out more fat my milk supply dropped almost overnight. I was shocked, but adding back in calories and fats helped almost immediately. We do a lot of taco nights (those torrillas pictured above are fantastic!) and at least once a week lately we have been having a Digorno pizza. The Garlic Bread Pizza to be specific. It is delicious and I joke that it’s milk magic because I always seem to pump a lot after eating it (more so high in fat than magic haha!).

Snack:

After dinner I am usually up for a long time, and I do allow myself another snack here even if it’s late at night.

Drinks:

I drink water almost exlusively! I do drink low calorie gatorade to help with milk supply. Some nights I have a glass of wine.

WHAT I TAKE TO INCREASE MILK SUPPLY:

Fenugreek

Blessed Thistle

I take 6 fenugreek and 6 blessed thistle/day. I take them 3 times a day so 2 pills at once isn’t two bad. I personally notice a much bigger difference with the Fenugreek and if you’re only going to do one I would pick it. *Note: PLEASE be careful with supplements like this, talk to your doctor or lactation consultant, and follow the directions on the bottle. Also, Milk Thistle is not the same as Blessed Thistle, and Milk Thistle is NOT good for aiding milk supply.

Brewers Yeast

Flaxseed

When I was breastfeeding my oldest I made lactation cookies every week…yummy! But now I find it easier and more skinny jean friendly to simply mix these into my protein shakes each day.

Olive Oil

My friend suggested that I take shots of olive oil when my milk supply crashed when I changed my diet too fast with Logan, and gross as it sounds it really works. It is good fats and isn’t as bad as it sounds though I did plug my nose the first few times.

Gatroade:

This works. It really works! Be careful, gatorade is quite high in calories if you’re trying to calorie count or watch your intake.

Oats/Oatmeal:

I have this every day in some form because it’s healthy and filling, but it also aids in milk supply.

OTHER OPTION:

Mother Milk Tea

This is very popular, and although I am not using it this time I did take this when I breastfed Hailey.

PUMPING? SCHEDULE? STORING?

If you are interested in what I do as far as a pumping schedule, pumping tools, power pumping, storing my breastmilk let me know! I can also share when or how I use the supplements and foods mentioned above in my diet,  so please comment and I will happily do a part 2 of this post! I really hope this is in some way helpful to you, and if it is please share with your mommy friends!!

As always thanks so much for reading!! It really does make my day anytime someone subscribes or comments!! THANK YOU!!
